The Suffering Servant

This week's Scripture passage is one of the four servant songs of Isaiah. Written in poetic style, it is all too literal for us, who live after the coming of Jesus. As we get ready for the 40 days of Lent leading to Easter, it is a good time to review the story of how much our Lord and Savior suffered that we might live.

Christ, Our Suffering Servant

After the crucifixion, two disciples mournfully commented: "We had hoped that [Jesus] was the one who was going to redeem Israel" (Luke 24:21). To them, a "crucified messiah" was a contradiction in terms. Why do we have a "Suffering Servant" as our Messiah? Let's ponder this difficult question in this week's article.
